Interview with Freak of Superhorror (Bar Festival 2019)

As I told you in the report from the Bar Festival and the Sleaze Fest two weeks ago, I had planned to do a video interview with the Italian band Superhorror at the Paunchy Cats. Or rather in the hotel Preußischer Hof 😀 But organizational problems destroyed the plan. So I sat down with the singer of Superhorror in the back of the bar and just had a relaxed talk without the camera… here is the result.
The zombie-like singer Freak, who has been dead for 13 years now, talks about their little European „crusade“, about their growing but also changing record label and why the make-up of the band is way more than decoration!
Here is an older interview with Edward J. Freak

Foxxy:
Ok, screw it. I’m just gonna record what we are saying right now, and then this will be the interview.
Freak:
This is cheating.
Foxxy:
Maybe. But otherwise we would have to do the video now and you don’t wanna leave the place 😛
So you just told me that you are working a normal 8 hour job?
Freak:
Yeah, just like Bruce Wayne. I need to work 8 hours to make money. And to hide my living dead nature.
Foxxy:
So you have to act and paint yourself as if you were alive?
Freak:
Of course. I have to wear professional multi-layer make-up or they will see that I’m dead.
Foxxy:
And what about the smell?
Freak:
No, no, no, that is not a problem. The truth is I don’t wanna give away too many secrets 😉 We have particular products that keep the smell away.
Foxxy:
Ok, then a different topic. You had to switch slot positions with Strykenine today?
Freak:
Yeah, it was because of a problem with traffic. We both had a lot of traffic and the other guys, with their van, arrived a little bit late. But we had a good crowd, the people were crazy, so I think it’s not a problem.
Foxxy:
Tell me something about the tour you are on right now. Is it a real tour?
Freak:
Haha, I would prefer to call it a crusade. Only three gigs is a little too small to call it a tour. But we are here in Germany today and tomorrow we are going to Holland. We have a gig in Amsterdam and then in Rotterdam on Sunday. And then hopefully we will back home on Monday.

Foxxy:
Are you going on more gigs later
Freak:
No, I think these will be the last shows for a while. We are supposed to go to the studio now to record the new album. We have all the songs done, we just need to enter the studio and start recording. But don’t worry, we won’t stop to play live. This is actually the reason why we started the band: to play live! So if Paunchy Cats would call us again, we couldn’t say no.
Foxxy:
Do you already have a name for the album?
Freak:
We have some ideas. But differently from the last album we don’t wanna think too much about how it will look, about the folders, the title or the artwork. Because last time we did that and it was a big mistake. We understood that the people who will help us sell the album will decide with us on things like the look. First they need to like the songs. If the label is interested in the songs, then we will work together on all the other stuff.
Foxxy:
So you don’t have a label yet?
Freak:
Hopefully we will have one. We were working with an independent Italian label for many years and they are getting bigger and bigger, but now they are mostly focused on AOR music.
Foxxy:
But it’s not Frontiers? 😀
Freak:
No, haha! But they’re are trying. The label is working with a new partner which was Frontiers before. They are expanding. Just AOR is definitely not our genre. So maybe we have to find a new label, but after 13 years we also may try to do a self-production. Then we don’t need a label.

13 years dead

Foxxy:
If it’s not AOR at all, what is your genre?
Freak:
This is the biggest question in the world.
I keep asking this question to every person I meet. It’s some kind of horror-rock-metal-I don’t know. Could you tell me which genre we play?
Foxxy:
I’m not sure. That’s why I was asking…
Freak:
And it’s not easy to sell your band if you don’t know what you are playing…
Foxxy:
You are playing Dead Metal! Not Death Metal, but Dead Metal.
Freak:
Yeah, right.. But that is why we usually don’t promote our band online. It’s better if we get on stage and someone sees us. That’s the way we do it, not through the genre.
Foxxy:
And what is the special thing about your live shows? What are you doing on stage?
Freak:
We’ll just be ourselves 100%. Many people say we would hide our faces behind the make-up. But there are two functions of this make-up: The first one is practical. It keeps my face together. Because, you know, I should rot away. The second one is that this is what’s on the inside. When we get on stage and put on our make-up we actually show what’s inside of us. We become ourselves one thousand times more. The secret is just to go up there and have a great time for yourself. Then the audience will have a great time, too. Hopefully.
Foxxy:
Nice last words. Thank you very much!
Freak:
Thank you, too.
